who, what, when, where, WHY?

The most simple, yet thought provoking question a person can ask is ‘why?’.

‘Why?’ you may be wondering…

Because it’s the most direct way to ask someone to explain their reasoning on a certain topic. Often, people just state their belief and don’t give much context as to their reasoning. Asking ‘why’ allows us to better understand one another and in turn lets us learn more from the diverse groups of thought around us.

For example, if I came to someone and said, “I want to start a blog”, there’s a multitude of questions one could ask. They could ask: “what will you write about?”, “who inspired you to start one?”, “where do you plan to post it?”. All of these, when answered, get across only small details. To me, the most valuable question someone could ask would be, “why are you starting a blog?”.

Since nobody has asked me yet (probably because I didn’t tell anyone I’m starting a blog), I might as well ask myself.

I have two answers for why:

#1: The more I write, the less I think. I tend to wrestle with the same thoughts in my head often. I write to forget and move onto what’s next, while keeping an archive of all of my thoughts so I can go back and see what I was once thinking. Doing this allows me to grow through writing by exploring concepts and ideas that I would have never otherwise been able to. This blog gives me a place to do that.

#2: Success is not fostered alone. Success is fostered around ambitious, intelligent, energetic people with an aligned goal. I have been around some of these people yet am on the search for more. I’ve had a chance to work with some and enjoyed every bit of the work I’ve gotten to do with them. I want to do more great work with great people and will be soon. Here’s why writing a blog helps:

In business, your reputation precedes you. With no reputation, it is difficult to meet particular people you desire to meet who are bound to help you along your path. Of course there are serendipitous events where the right people and events come into your life at the right time, but those instances are few and far between. One should not rely on these events to just happen. Instead they should do their best to increase the frequency of them occurring. If anything, they happen more by putting yourself in the right places more (writing a blog, posting online, going to events, etc).

In order to give myself the best chance of meeting people that can help me achieve what I desire, I need to build a reputation online that highlights what I have done. A resume of sorts, and put this resume in places that certain people are likely to see me. By doing this, I can meet people that I want to work with, learn from, get investment from, be friends with, have a relationship with. There is a ton of reasons for why I want to meet people. Writing a blog helps me meet them. It all just starts with me building a reputation that others find fascinating and want to be a part of.

Building my reputation is step 1, getting in front of those people is step 2. Yet, they are always working in parallel. As I am building my reputation I should be getting in front of people. As I am getting in front of people I should be building my reputation.

Right now, at 21, building my reputation online so that whenever anybody wants to, they can go learn about me and the things I’ve done seems like an excellent use of my time.

Although I’m just getting started, I can use this as a platform to discuss what I’ve done, what I will do, and what I am learning along the way.

Ok, that should answer why I’m starting this blog.

Well that was fun… writing my first blog. My mind is bouncing off the walls thinking about what this will become! Stay tuned. I can’t wait to show you what’s next.

Remember, start asking ‘why?’ more. People’s answers will surprise you. Perhaps mine surprised you.

See you soon *‿*
